Aviela x Skiin

The needs of our skin change with the seasons. It can be tricky to know how to care for your skin as the weather and our habits change. To help us understand what we can do to make sure our skin is looking and feeling healthy all year round, we've been speaking with Dr Tina Bani, Founder of the medical skin care clinic; Skiin.Online...

We all seem to notice a change in our skin when the weather gets cold but can you tell us why this is?

"It’s very common to develop dry skin in the winter. This is because the cold weather can lead to increased trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) from the top layers of the skin. In turn, this can lead to cracked, dehydrated skin.  This is why it’s really important to rehydrate the skin with humectants and protect the skin barrier with emollients in the winter months."

What skin changes should we keep an eye out for in winter?

"When the skin barrier is dry and dehydrated, you may notice a rough texture to the skin. A compromised skin barrier can lead to dermatitis (itchy, visibly cracked skin), redness and irritation.  Listen to your skin; dial down the actives and opt for more nourishing emollients such as shea butter."

Are there any vitamins, minerals, nutrients or ingredients you recommend to combat ‘winter skin’?

"Due to the increased TEWL, it’s really important to effectively replace the water and oil in the skin. You can replace water with humectants such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and alpha-hydroxy acids (lactic acid).

As well as replacing water, the skin also needs lipids and emollients to strengthen the delicate skin barrier in winter.  My favourite emollient is shea butter, which is why I will recommend Aviela products to my patients.  Aviela’s products contain pure shea butter, which help deliver fatty acids and vitamins A and E straight to the epidermis of the skin."

This month we're focusing on self care.  Other than keeping on top of your winter skincare regime what do you do to look after yourself in the winter?

"For me, the run-up to Christmas can be a busy time. It’s super important to keep on top of my physical and mental health too. I like to take time out from my schedule to exercise; practise yoga and chill in front of the fire.  I also love winter fashion, so you might find me treating myself to some snuggly layers!"
